Artist of the Day - osquinn
If someone asked you to describe hyper-pop, the fastest and most exciting growing subgenre of hip hop, you would be better off just throwing on on a few osquinn tracks, rather than trying to gather together some words that attempt to describe the genre’s bombastic sound. osquinn embodies everything that is hyper-pop, from her lyrical content to her out of this world, futuristic beat selection, to her lovably honest and down to earth demeanor. We covered Glaive for our last artist spotlight and discussed how rare and special it is that an artist has such a cohesive and consistent sound at age 15, but believe it not, osquinn is only 15 too!
Fans of the hip-hop underground may recognize the name p4rkr as being a purveyor of hyper-pop, but p4rkr and osquinn are actually one in the same. P4rkr represents osquinn’s dead name before she came out as trans; nowadays she goes by both names and has said she doesn’t really care for pronouns in general.
Before getting into hyper-pop, osquinn listened to a ton of Chicago drill, which interestingly, could not be more sonically different than the music she makes these days. Both genres however, emphasize high energy and very real depictions of whats going on in an artists daily life. Drill may focus more on external issues, while hyper-pop deals with mostly internal battles and the idea of struggling to maintain positive mental health in an increasingly chaotic world, so its not difficult to see where the genre’s intersect.
Soundcloud has become known for its pockets of artist collectives, a popular way for young artists with similar sounds and intentions to band together and push their music/brand as a whole. osquinn has found much success within a number of collectives, including, but not limited to Novagang, Helix Tears, and slowsilver03 to name a few. If you enjoy osquinn’s music, chances are you will enjoy the music from members of her collective as well, so do yourself a favor and spend an afternoon diving into the world of osquinn and hyper-pop.
